MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries) will adopt ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) and it will go into effect from July 1, 2004 as a domestic law. Implementation at 28 domestic ports, including Busan Port, strengthened domestic port security in accordance with the international standard.
To this, MOMAF issued security certifications based on port security plans, and security evaluations at last month.
October 25, MOMAF promulgated a law that accepted ISPS as a domestic law, and published a guidebook on security evaluations and drawing up security plans.
One MOMAF official said, "We will supply ultramodern equipment like CCTV systems and inspection instruments for vehicles to advance port facility security systems,"and "we will install ID systems at Busan and Inchon Port to automatically control vehicle and personnel traffic by the end of this year."
MOMAF held two security training seminars at the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology for 104 port security personnel help with the transition for the new laws.
One MOMAF official said,"Our ports will be some of the most secure world wide when we get everyone up to speed on the new standards and laws."
