* Shinsundae terminal starts building 8,000 TEU berth *

Shinsundae terminal in Busan, Korea started construction on a 8,000 TEU berth, keeping pace with global standards.
P & City Co., a joint venture company of PECT, an operator of the Shinsundae Container Terminal with the Korea Container Terminal Authority, held a ground-breaking ceremony in the morning of Nov. 11 with attendance from port and shipping company officials.
The fifth berth, with investments totaling 120 billion won, will be equipped with a 300 meter long berth, a 32,000 pyoung of container yards and will accommodate 8,000 TEU vessels with the help of a 22 row gantry crane and a 16 meter deep berth. It is scheduled for completion August 2007.
P & City Co., suggested that the 300 meter long berth be completed by the second half of 2005 before anything else in order to prepare for port development in neighboring countries and the new class of super-sized vessels. Especially, the fifth berth will be handled with partially automated container yard facilities. The Shinsundae terminal will add another 800,000 TEUs capacity to its current 1.2 million TEUs.
An insider from Shinsundae terminal said that super-size vessels will be safely accommodated with the completion of the fifth berth. International competitiveness for Busan Port will rise with as productivity increases, he added.
