Busan Port increased transshipment cargoes over the last 6 months.
Busan Port Authority (BPA) announced on October 21 that the port handled 8,367,933 TEU from January to September, increasing 8.3% as compared with the same period of last year.
Among them, transshipment cargoes recorded 3,459,572 TEU, increasing 7.2% compared with the same period of last year.
transshipment cargoes through Busan Port have decreased since the cargo labor union strike in September of last year, but slowly began to increase starting in April with a modest 4.1%. Growth continued with 14.1% in May, 11.6% in June, 9.7% in July, 11.7% in August and 20.1% in September.
By Wharf, increase rates for container cargoes were 12.6% at Jasungdae, 11.7% at Sinsundae, 8.3% at Gamman, 5.8% at Singamman and 0.9% at Wooam.
Meanwhile, Busan Port saw 9,467 container ships in the first 9 months of this year. That was down by 20 vessels compared to last year. Shipping analysts attribute the small drop to larger vessels carrying more containers.
An insider from BPA said, "As more shipping companies call at Busan and more transshipment cargoes increase thanks to general increases in all cargoes and transshipment cargoes from Japan".
