In early 2005, Busan will receive 8,000 TEU vessels.
The Shinsundae container terminal, an operating company of Shinsundae terminal, revealed that it will dredge its third and fourth berths to make water depths 15-16 meters by early 2005. The forward berth is currently 14-15 meters deep. The dredging starts from the end of this year at a cost of 7.2 billion won per meter per berth. The 14 meter deep third berth will be dredged to 15 and the 15 meter deep fourth berth to 16. After dredging, the third berth will accommodate 6,000 TEU vessels and the fourth berth up to 8,000 TEU vessels.
The dredging business aims to provide high quality service to shipping companies and shippers by accepting bigger container vessels.
In the mean time, Shinsundae terminal also has plans for the fifth berth, which started construction this December to have a 16 meter deep berth with 146.9 billion won investment to accommodate 8,000 TEU vessels.
