October 4th, 2007, Busan, Korea- With the growth of local cargo and transshipment cargoes, container volume at Busan Port exceeded 10million TEU as of October 3rd.
It is a new record for the port to handle more than 10million TEU in less than 10 month, which gives Busan port the green light to become a major hub port for Northeast Asia.
Busan Port Authority(BPA)said on October 4th the container volume handled at Busan port at the end of September this year was 9,923,000TEU, an 11% increase from the previous year and projected that 13,450,000 TEU would be handled by the end of 2007.
The increase was thanks to a more than 20% increase of transshipment cargoes for 3 consecutive months and an increased local cargo volume boosted by domestic economic growth.
BPA analyzed that many liners' tendency to use the port as a main port to handle transshipment cargoes and container tax exemption had helped to boost Busan Port's container volume.
Boo Won Dang, a marketing director at BPA said that the record of more than 10 million TEU was the result of efforts made by terminal operators at Busan Port and related port officials, adding that BPA and the terminal operators are doing their best to strengthen the port's productivity by expanding port facilities.
